The Studies/ Compositions I Collection

The Studies/Compositions I collection serves as the foundational laboratory of my artistic practice. While it began as a series of experiments with colour, materials, and techniques, it has since evolved into a vital, standalone project that both informs and anticipates my larger-scale works. These pieces represent the intimate, small-scale experiments with gesture and colour that laid the essential groundwork for the monumental Nicosia Manifesto series. This collection is where I first began to negotiate the relationship between different ‘chemical personalities,’ such as the volatile interaction between heavy emulsion and fluid water.

The collection is defined by several key artistic pillars, chief among them the primacy of composition - an instinct rooted in my early training in Nicosia and sharpened by my subsequent exploration of art, design, and architecture. I frequently utilize multiple panels to explore how a single gesture or colour story can be fractured and reassembled across different surfaces. This structural exploration is supported by a diverse palette of emulsion, acrylic, tempera, spray paint, and water.

Ultimately, these works document a ‘rhythmic negotiation’ between the raw, unhesitating marks of Abstract Expressionism and a more disciplined, minimalist sensibility. In many ways, this collection is ‘ahead’ of my other series; it acts as a personal archive of gestures and ideas - much like the sketchbooks I keep - serving as a constant testing ground for future work. However, unlike my sketchbooks, I have made the deliberate decision to evolve these experiments into finished artworks in their own right and with their own distinct personality.
